Life in Türkiye: What to Expect

In Türkiye, international students find a welcoming, high-energy environment. Academic life is often social and collaborative, with vibrant campus cultures that include active student clubs. While English is the academic medium at many top universities, the local hospitality means you’ll likely pick up "survival Turkish" over tea (çay) with your peers.

Outside the classroom, life is remarkably affordable. Most major cities offer "Student Cards" which provide massive discounts on an efficient public transport network of metros, ferries, and buses.

Practical life involves navigating the "e-ikamet" system for your residence permit. Universities usually have dedicated International Offices to help you with this process, but you should prepare for a bit of paperwork—a small trade-off for the rich cultural experiences Türkiye offers.

Work & Practical Experience Opportunities

Türkiye has expanded work rights for international students to better integrate global talent into its economy.

  • Student Work Rights: Undergraduate students can work part-time (up to 24 hours per week) starting from their second year. Graduate and PhD students can begin working from their first year.
  • Internships (Staj): Many programs, especially in Engineering and Hospitality, require mandatory internships. Global companies like Siemens, Bosch, and L'Oréal Luxe frequently recruit "WINterns" from Turkish campuses.
  • On-Campus Jobs: Universities offer roles in libraries, international offices, and as research assistants, which are often easier to secure and provide a great way to meet fellow students.

Understanding Turkish Immigration & Entry Pathways

Türkiye uses a two-step process: you enter on a visa and then apply for a residency permit once you are in the country.

English Proficiency Requirements

Proof of English-language proficiency is mandatory for admission to all English-medium programs in Türkiye. The TOEFL iBT® test is one of the most widely accepted and trusted exams by Turkish universities. It is frequently used not only for admissions but also to exempt students from the mandatory "English Preparatory Year," saving you a full year of study time.

How TOEFL® Supports You

The TOEFL iBT® test confirms you are ready for the high academic standards of Türkiye’s top universities. It provides a reliable measure of your ability to participate in lectures, write research papers, and engage in the professional internships that are key to the Turkish education experience.

While not free, they are highly subsidized. In 2026, international students in public universities pay a "contribution fee" that is significantly lower than private university tuition, though prices have shifted slightly to keep up with global standards.

Yes, but you will need to transition from a student residence permit to a work permit. Türkiye is currently simplifying the process for graduates in high-demand fields like IT and Engineering to stay and work through the "Turquoise Card" or similar work permit schemes.

This is the card that allows you to live in Türkiye for the duration of your studies. You must apply for it within 30 days of arriving in Türkiye.

Yes. To get your residence permit, you must have health insurance. You can choose the state-run SGK (highly recommended for full coverage) or a private policy that meets the minimum legal requirements.

If you cannot prove sufficient English (or Turkish) proficiency upon arrival, you must spend your first year in a "Prep School" learning the language. Submitting a high TOEFL iBT® score allows you to skip this and go straight into your first-year department courses.
