Life in UAE: What to Expect

In the UAE, international learners are immersed in a high-energy, "can-do" environment. Academic programs are highly career-oriented, often featuring guest lectures from industry leaders and site visits to world-leading infrastructure projects. While Arabic is the official language, English is the de facto language of daily life, commerce, and higher education.

Outside the classroom, life in the UAE is synonymous with variety. From the futuristic skylines and world-class shopping malls to the traditional souks and desert adventures, there is a constant sense of discovery. Most international students live in dedicated "Academic Cities" or vibrant residential hubs like JLT and International City, which offer a sense of community specifically tailored to young professionals and learners.

Practical life is defined by convenience and safety, and Dubai consistently ranks among the world’s safest cities and offers a highly efficient, air-conditioned public transport network.

Work & Practical Experience Opportunities

The UAE offers clear, regulated pathways for students to gain professional experience while they study.

  • Part-Time Work: Students at licensed institutions can apply for part-time work permits through their university, typically allowing for 20 hours of work per week.
  • Internships: Many degrees mandate internships. These are closely regulated to ensure students receive valuable experience while maintaining their visa compliance.
  • Post-Graduation Pathways: Indian graduates now benefit from the 2-year Post-Graduation Visa, while other international graduates often use the 90- to 120-day Jobseeker Visa to secure employer sponsorship.
  • On-Campus Roles: Many universities offer paid student ambassador or administrative roles that provide easy-to-access experience.

Understanding UAE Immigration & Entry Pathways

Entering the UAE for study or work is a streamlined, digital-first process. Visas are typically sponsored by the institution or an employer rather than the individual.

English Proficiency Requirements

Because The UAE’s academic and professional worlds are almost entirely English-medium, proof of proficiency is non-negotiable. The TOEFL iBT® test is a trusted standard used by the UAE’s international branch campuses and local universities to ensure you can handle the rigors of a globalized curriculum.

How TOEFL® Supports You

The TOEFL iBT® test is often the first step in your UAE journey. It not only fulfills admission requirements but also signals to potential employers that you are ready for the fast-paced, English-speaking corporate culture that defines Dubai, known as the "City of Gold."

FAQ

Yes. You can switch to a Jobseeker Visa for up to 120 days to find a role. Once you have a job offer, your employer will handle the transition to an Employment Visa. Indian nationals in 2026 have access to a guaranteed 2-year post-study work visa.

For branch campuses (e.g., University of Birmingham Dubai), the degree certificate is identical to the one issued in the home country and is accredited both by the home country's board and the UAE’s KHDA.

It is a long-term (5 or 10 year) residency permit granted to "high-achieving" students. In 2026, this typically requires a GPA of 3.5 or 3.8+ (depending on the university's ranking) and a recommendation from the institution.

In the UAE, you generally cannot sponsor your own residency. Your university sponsors your student visa (renewable annually), and your employer sponsors your work visa once you are hired.
