How to Register for the TOEFL Essentials Test

The easiest way to register is through your ETS account, but you can also register by phone or by mail by filling out the Registration Form (PDF). The Bulletin also contains complete instructions for registration, forms, score reporting information, policies and procedures.

The Name You Use When Creating an ETS Account

When you create an account, make sure the name and date of birth you use exactly matches the name and date of birth that appears on the identification (ID) document you’ll present on the day of the test. If this information doesn’t match, you won’t be able to take the test and your test fee won’t be refunded. For more information, see ID Requirements.

Apply for or view approved testing accommodations
Purchase official test prep
Sign up for the free TOEFL Search Service
View or download your scores
Order additional score reports or other services
Update personal information, such as your email or mailing address

Planning ahead when scheduling your test date

It's important to consider your overall timeline when choosing a test date. You need to make sure scores will be sent prior to application deadlines, and you may want to leave time for retesting, if needed. Be sure to:

pick a test date at least 2 to 3 months before your earliest admissions deadline to ensure your scores will be reported in time
register for the test 4 months before your desired test date

Canceling and rescheduling

The easiest way to cancel or reschedule a test is through your ETS account.
