TOEFL iBT®

The World's English Test

TOEFL iBT Speaking Section

The TOEFL iBT Speaking section measures your ability to communicate clearly and effectively in spoken English in academic and campus life settingsmodern academic environments. The tasks reflect the kinds of speaking you may do as a student, such as sharing information, responding to questions, and expressing ideas in structured situations.

The Speaking section uses focused, structured tasks to measure how well you understand spoken English and how clearly you can express yourself.

Speaking Task Types

Speaking skills are measured using two task types:

  • Listen and Repeat
You will listen to short sentences and repeat them exactly as you hear them. This task measures your ability to process spoken English and produce speech that is accurate and clearly intelligible.
  • Take an Interview
You will participate in a simulated interview related to academic or campus situations. You will answer questions about your experiences and opinions, which measures your ability to communicate clearly, maintain a natural speaking pace, and use appropriate vocabulary and grammar.

What to Expect

  • Tasks are concise and focused, helping you manage your time effectively.
  • You will speak into a microphone to record your responses.
  • Scenarios are based on academic and campus-related situations, and no specialized background knowledge is required.
  • You may hear native-speaker English accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand, or Australia.

This section is designed to reflect real-world academic and campus communication while giving you a clear and fair way to show your English speaking skills.
