TOEFL iBT®

The World's English Test

TOEFL iBT Test Writing Section

The TOEFL iBT Writing section measures your ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English. The tasks reflect the kinds of writing you may do as a student in today’s classrooms.

The Writing section uses focused, practical writing tasks to measure how well you organize ideas, use grammar and vocabulary accurately, and write for a specific purpose.

Writing tasks type

Writing skills are measured using three task types:

  • Build a Sentence
You will arrange words or phrases to form a complete and grammatical sentence or question. This task measures your understanding of English sentence structure.
  • Write an Email
You will write an email in an academic or social situation, such as making a request, giving information, or proposing a solution. This task measures your ability to write clearly, stay on topic, and follow basic writing conventions.
  • Write for an Academic Discussion
You will contribute to an online classroom discussion by stating and supporting your opinion. This task measures your ability to develop ideas, respond to others’ viewpoints, and write in an academic tone.

What to Expect

  • Tasks are concise and focused, helping you manage your time effectively.
  • You will type your responses on a computer keyboard.
  • Topics are designed so that no specialized background knowledge is needed.
  • Scoring focuses on how clearly and effectively you communicate your ideas, not on writing a perfect first draft.

This section is designed to reflect real academic writing tasks while giving you a clear and fair way to show your English writing skills.
